    Healing of Eye
    C. H. • June 15, 2008

On May 23, 2008, my husband and I visited the Shrine. My husband is not a Catholic and I'm a Ukrainian Catholic. My prayer to Mary, Refuge of Holy Love, that day was to open his heart to Her while we walked the grounds. Not being a Catholic, he did not understand the veneration of Mary that I had and I wanted him to come to that understanding.

My husband had developed a torn and detached retina of the left eye on March 31, 2006. He had nine surgeries from March 31, 2006 to May of 2007. They finally could no longer do any more surgeries so they filled the left eye with clear oil to hold the retina in place. They explained to him to keep his glasses on, not for vision, but for protection of the good right eye. When he would take the glasses off and close the good right eye, he could only see gray (not any color) and, if he looked at the sidewalk, he could not even see the cracks in the cement. He realized that if he lost the good right eye, he would be blind.

When we came to the Maranatha Spring Water, my husband pumped the water into a jug that we brought. As the water went down the funnel, I decided to ask him to take off his glasses and close the left eyelid. I touched the water to the eyelid and made the Sign of the Cross on the eyelid. I asked Mary to heal his eye and said a few simple prayers.

The next morning he got up first and when I came down later, he asked me to hold up some fingers on my right hand. He took off the glasses, closed the good right eye and could see the number of my fingers. He then stood up and could read the numbers on our wall clock on the far wall. He pointed to the TV and the morning newscaster and said, "She is wearing a red jacket." He still had the good right eye closed. He started to cry and then I started to cry and we thanked Mary over and over for Her miracle.

We will see the doctor in late July. The doctors always told us that if the oil was removed from the bad eye, he might regain some vision, a little at a time. It would never happen with the oil in the eye, nor would he get immediate vision. We both know he was blessed with a miracle.
